Hot Springs, Virginia April 2025 The fourth stop of The Long Distance Art Project I’ve landed in Bath County, Virginia. This place is a hidden gem nestled in the Allegheny Mountains. The mineral hot springs at The Homestead Resort have been attracting visitors since 1766. It is a special opportunity to soak in these historic pools “taking the waters” is what Thomas Jefferson called it. What??! After researching for a month, I have ideas for a new series rolling around in my head. I am excited to join the conversation of “bathers” with the great masters; Cezanne, Bonnard, Utamaro, Matisse, as well as David Park, George Johanson, Judy Biesanz, Larry Grabaer and Heidi Lanino. The subject of bathers and the healing power of water is a universal theme and will be a great challenge. When we arrived in March I started a couple of paintings finding shapes in the bare branches of the huge oak trees. Springtime is just around the corner. The daffodils and white flowering trees are awake. When all of these mountains explode with bright green leaves, I will be in absolute heaven.
