The Suffrage Daily News
Inspired by a famous Helena photograph of three trailblazing suffragettes, this piece pays tribute to the fierce women who fought for the right to vote in Montana in 1914. Central to this legacy is Jeanette Rankin, who became the first woman in Congress and a lifelong pacifist, famously voting against both World Wars. She often sported bold prints and extravagant feathered hats, Rankin never blended in. She gave some of the most powerful speeches of her time and lead peace marches into her 80s.
Painted right here in the foothills of Helena, near Rankin’s stomping grounds, this piece captures both the beauty of the Montana landscape and the spirit of these women who stood up for what was right, even when it meant standing alone. This work honors those who led by example, showing us all what courage looks like.
