Star Route Postwoman

This portrait of Mary Fields is a true centerpiece of the Wild Women of Montana series. Painted over a reclaimed vintage print, the original 1970s floral design peeks through, adding depth and honoring the layered history of this woman. It's framed in a beautifully carved, distressed wood and gold frame.

Mary Fields, or “Stagecoach Mary,” was a force of nature. After being freed from slavery in Tennessee at 35, she eventually made her way to Montana, where she quickly became known for her toughness and charisma. Standing six feet tall, Mary broke all norms, drinking whiskey, hanging out in saloons, and always packing a pistol. She became a mail carrier by outshining every man in town, hitching six horses to a stagecoach faster than anyone else at the age of 60. Mary was said to fight off a pack of wolves on one of her routes and claimed to have a pet eagle. She lived life her way and was loved by everyone she met.

Red Light Saloon

Here is Helena’s own Chicago Joe. This piece is inspired by the atmosphere of the late 1800s Red Light Saloon Dance Hall. This madam was known to throw lavish parties and famously banned her husband from drinking or gambling with ads in the local paper. She was one of the largest landowners in Montana’s early days.

Painted on vintage floral fabric, this piece shows Chicago Joe standing proudly in a flowing green velvet dress with high collar made of pink lace and jeweled accents, surrounded by her girls.

Susie Yellowtail

This painting celebrates the life and legacy of Susie Yellowtail, a woman who bridged two worlds with compassion and strength. As one of the first Native American registered nurses, Susie navigated the challenges of Western medicine while holding close the healing wisdom of her Apsáalooke (Crow) heritage.

Each stage of her journey is woven into this piece—from her early days as a young girl entering a foreign world to her return to the community, where she practiced a powerful blend of medical training and traditional knowledge. Tobacco, a sacred plant to the Apsáalooke people, appears throughout as a symbol of her roots, resilience, and the enduring spirit of her culture.

Susie Yellowtail, a pathfinder who forever changed her community’s access to health and wellness.

The Last Best Place

I’ve fallen deeply in love with Montana’s mountains. They’ve filled me with life and inspired me to create this body of work in just a few months. There’s no other way to describe it—Big Sky Country is a real thing, and it’s breathtaking. The sky is a stage, filled with magpies and bald eagles, and at night, a blanket of stars that feels endless.

This painting is a direct expression of what this place has made me feel. Motana you hold a special place in my heart.

A Gift from a Poet

Harriet Cushman was a pioneering poultry specialist. She traveled throughout Montana for 30 years to educate farmers and native tribes on bird care and egg production. Her innovative practices greatly enhanced the local poultry industry, even supporting its survival during the Great Depression. She was actively involved with the Blackfeet and other tribes, promoting economic opportunities through agriculture and education

Beyond her career achievements, Harriet was a prolific poet, sharing her love for the beauty of Montana through her writings, illustrations and photography. She sent out a Christmas card every year with photograph and one of her poems. She At one point she maintained a list of nearly 600 people. Very inspirational to me!

Last Chance Gulch

Dorothy Baker, known as Big Dorothy, a Montana entrepreneur who ran a respected brothel in downtown Helena until 1972. Loved by the community, she was more than just a businesswoman, she supported local charities and helped many of her girls attend college. With connections to influential men, Dorothy had a unique role in Helena's social fabric.

This acrylic painting captures Big Dorothy in her younger years, featuring a playful twinkle in her eye. I’ve incorporated vintage floral fabric from a local antique store into the artwork, blending pieces of Helena's history into my work. Behind her is the iconic Last Chance Gulch, where a huge deposit of placer gold was found in 1864.

When you visit Helena, check out the walking mall along Last Chance Gulch. Dorothy’s rooms are now offices located above the Windbag Saloon.

The Suffrage Daily News

This piece pays tribute to the fierce women who fought for the right to vote in Montana in 1914. Central to this legacy is Jeanette Rankin. She was the first woman in Congress and a lifelong pacifist, famously voting against both World Wars. She often wore bold printed blouses and extravagant feathered hats. She gave some of the most powerful speeches of her time and lead peace marches into her 80s.

I painted this piece right here in the foothills of Helena, near Rankin’s stomping grounds.
