A Gift from a Poet
This painting is of Harriet Cushman, a pioneering poultry specialist. Harriet traveled throughout Montana for 30 years to educate farmers and native tribes on bird care and egg production. Her innovative practices greatly enhanced the local poultry industry, even supporting its survival during the Great Depression. She dedicated significant effort to supporting Native education and was actively involved with the Blackfeet and other tribes, promoting economic opportunities through agriculture and education
Beyond her career achievements, Harriet was a prolific poet, sharing her love for the beauty of Montana through her writings, illustrations and photography. She sent out a Christmas card every year with photograph and one of her poems. She At one point she maintained a list of nearly 600 people.! I love this so much.
