Star Route Postwoman
This large-scale portrait of Mary Fields is a true centerpiece in the Wild Women of Montana series. Painted over a reclaimed vintage print, the original 1970s floral design peeks through, adding depth and honoring the layered history of this woman. It's framed in a beautifully carved, distressed wood and gold frame.
Mary Fields, or “Stagecoach Mary,” was a force of nature. After being freed from slavery in Tennessee at 35, she eventually made her way to Montana, where she quickly became known for her toughness and charisma. Standing six feet tall, Mary broke all norms—drinking whiskey, hanging out in saloons, and always packing a pistol. She became a mail carrier by outshining every man in town, hitching six horses to a stagecoach faster than anyone else at the age of 60. Mary’s legend only grew, she fought off a pack of wolves on one of her routes and, according to stories, even had a pet eagle. She lived life her way and was loved by everyone she met. This painting shows off her unbreakable spirit and celebrates a life lived without limits.
